A Tribute To “Rapping Your Ass Off”
I like rappers who help themselves. What I mean by that is that I appreciate rappers who are all about that hustle when they get in the boot. Put yet another way, I want these artist to work to get me to buy/download/listen to their lastest product.
I don’t need to tell you all that there are a gang of hip-hop artists out there who are damn lazy when it comes time to put down tracks for their latest LP. I like a work ethic. I respect rappers who care enough about their craft to be “hungry” as the industry terms it.
In summary: I always enjoy rappers who spit like their life depends on it. I can listen to these joints on my iPod all day. Why? Probably because that’s what rap is in ite essence: the aggressive expression of those trying to make their mark. It takes a real effort to cut through the clutter. You need to step your game up to the majors when the spotlight is upon you.
So, to illustrate what the hell I’m talking about, here are three tracks from artists you probably know and love. Take a minute to listen to what it sounds like to rap your ass off:
“Southside” (Common ft Kanye West)
Listening to these two Chi-Town monsters go line for line is amazing. Kanye especially raps like he’s still shopping a deal.
“All I Do” (Rhymefest)
This track put me onto another Chicago MC, Rhymefest. I’ve heard some internet hate on dude over the last while, but trust me – the dude who schooled Eminem at Scribble Jam is worth checking out. Watch him get down.
“Amerikkka’s Most Wanted” (Ice Cube)
When Cube left N.W.A., he had something to prove. Young, angry as hell and an MC at the top of his game. Man, I miss that.
Three (well, four) MCs that had a deal but still got on the track and ripped it apart like they hadn’t eaten in days. We need more. Maybe labels should get all Jerry McGuire – less artists, better product. I know it may be a drought for your favorite rapper, but it make the world a better place.
