Interview: Eminem Agrees With YFWB

Great White Hope

The BBC (over in the UK, dummies) caught up with Eminem and you can listen to the interview over at the big homie’s spot or you can read snippets in a few places .

But here’s a portion that caught my eye:

It’s been a few years since we last heard the great white rapper. During that time, he’s been listening to what hip-hop has become, and he’s not happy about it.

The rapper says that a lot of the hip-hop he hears today is garbage. Of course, with a few exceptions.

“I don’t mean everything about rap is crap. I just mean the majority of it,” he said. “Actually I think T.I.’s new album is great and I’ve been pumping that for the last two weeks every day in my car aside from my own stuff as I record it.

“Andre 3000 is also incredible. So I just mean rap in general.”

Here’s the thing: I agree with Em – there is a lot of straight garbage out there. A lot of stuff has been mass produced for quick sales or to jump on a fad or carbon copies of some other crew or artist.

But, I’m hopeful that this thing we call rap is starting to show signs sf a new renaissance (word to Q-Tip – damn I need spell check for that one). Heads and artists alike artists alike are starting to realize that a hook and some bulls–t computer beat won’t cut it in the game now.

And I’ve heard some of the most creative and interesting stuff in the last year than I have in the last five years. I think Kanye set it off and the so-called “hipster rap” movement has given it strength and its made your favorite rapper have to step hip rap hustle up to compete. We just need hardcore and even casual fans to start expecting more from those on the mic.

Oh, and Em doesn’t get a pass either – his album better not be bull–t.
