I’d Rather Face 50 In the Booth Than The Boardroom
Like a lot of people, your boy BDub isn’t really feeling 50 Cent on wax right now. Alright, “Get Up” is hot, but generally, the boy is falling off faster than the McCain campaign. But I have always been impressed with 50 Cent’s business accumen. The dude is clearly the CEO of G-Unit and he is the business and marketing mind behind his own success.
Now, 50 Cent has a new reality show on MTV . And I’ll say from the jump: I would and will watch his new show. Here’s the latest clip:
You’re putting your life in your hands there, Nathan. Every single time I’ve heard 50 Cent on the radio or TV, I’ve always been impressed with how him mind works. I’ve always respected rappers due to the fact that it takes a certain level of intelligence and mental dexterity to spit bar after bar of rhymes. I can’t do it, so props.
But, dude can spit fire in the booth, but if he is either too lazy or too distracted to get his business right, then your favorite rapper will ultimately lose.
Now, 50 may lyrically be average, his business game is T-I-G-H-T. From the Young Buck f*ckery to the way he murked Cam’Ron on the radio , Curtis is always one step ahead of the competition. Say what you want about thisis50.com , but that website is essentially a full-time interactive marketing tool for 50 and G-Unit. No other artist has anything close to such an online presence.
Compare that against a Soulja Boy, who clearly plans to retire in his mother’s basement (don’t front: “Bird Walk” is the career equivalent of the foreclosure crisis) or even a Suge Knight whould could not take the street mentality out of the boardroom (word to Jay Smooth ).
Maybe Diddy and Hova are on the same level, but there are few artists who control their own destiny – and the destiny of others – so well as 50 Cent. This guys may talk slow, but he doesn’t think slow.
Your boy has always been an advocate of hip-hop getting up on its business game. Its a big world out there, and while the rap industry may be posting some of the most exciting ish in music, Johnny Corporate doesn’t play. The more money rap makes, the more your favorite rapper can pay his/her bills. You may be indie as hell, but if you don’t have enough scratch to cop the new ProTools, you won;t be making tracks for too long.
Context is everything, so I’ll say this: in business terms, rap needs more 50 Cent.
