INDIE 500: “Welcome To New Black City” (D-Black)

DOWNLOAD
(Recreated from YFWB 1.0) Bronx bomber D-Black AKA Doughboy AKA Mr. October AKA Mr. Blackwell is the latest co-sign from hot producer and t-shirt magnate Mick Boogie. The man knows how to spot ‘em. D-Black is definitely on the come-up, if there is any justice in the world. If you are looking for some grimy street dude with a polished flow, don’t sleep on D-Black just because you may not be up on him. You will be soon enough.
New Black City is a tight mix of project stories, betrayal, love, laughs, life, party and bullsh*t. This boy D is a subatomic fusion of Jada, Big L, Beans with a little 50 Cent for kicks. Black is certainly not that flashy dude, but there’s an argument to be made that we’re all getting a little swaggered out. That’s not to say D-Black has no style; D brings it back to the block with Uptown flare. Witness:
“Hard Times”
They say that you are judged by the company you keep. If there is any truth in that, you can get a sense of who D is by the variety of dope co-signs: Skyzoo and Rapper Big Pooh in the booth, producers Nottz (“Top Of The World”, “Queen To Be”)and Illmind (“The Come Up”, “Paranoid”) behind the boards. Sonically, City goes far beyond a mixtape. These cuts are label-worthy. To show he can switch it up, Black is even kind enough to spit on a Just Blaze (“Its D-Black!”) joint and a Dilla (“Dollars Circulate”) track. D-Black is no slouch on the production tip either. He produces three cuts on City, including “Hard Times”.
One of the most compelling aspects to Black is his ability to ride over many different types of beats: something many one-dimensional rappers can’t swing these days. On one track (“Hard2Love”) D is sweet-talking the ladies; the next he’s bodying your favorite rapper (“Give It Up”). Ask D-Black what he’s all about in the booth and he’ll tell you: consistency. He’s right. No matter the subject matter, track or style, D brings that heat. Versatility is a lost tool in this thing we call hip-hop. Call him D-Black and Decker.
New Black City is a dope warning shot for the rappers eating right now. D-Black is on the way. I welcome his arrival in the music game.
