Why Are People Afraid of Soulja Boy?

What was supposed to be the next big serving of beef has turned into hamburger helper. It looks like the impending spat between XXL Freshman Charles Hamilton and ringtone king Soulja Boy is over before it began. Quick summary:
On Tuesday, XXL Freshman Charles Hamilton took to the airwaves to speak on how Soulja Boy was salting the game for all the up-and-comers: “He had like a billion views on YouTube . Had a bunch of MySpace friends. He’s smart for using the business. What the fuck does that have to do with him ruining the opportunity of people such as Corey Gunz, Mickey Factz, Kid Cudi to be accepted in the mainstream?! I really don’t wanna hear it, honestly.”
As he’s wont to do, Soulja jumped on YouTube to offer a response. Here’s the pertinent part: “ The boy ’bout to s tart crying. You gonna have to go to the drawing board right. You know get out the magic marker, X out the Sonic and you might just wanna fuck with Mario.”
Beef! Beef! Beef! Oh wait. Hamilton is in full retreat:
“I was called “the new Soulja Boy… you don’t think that would piss you off if you were NOTHING like Soulja Boy. I wasn’t tryna diss him… I was talkin’ aggressively out of frustration…” says Charles.
Well, that was fun while it lasted. Looks like Charles is learning what its like to be on a major label. There are rules now. Artists who have sold no units can’t talk ish about labelmates that have. But maybe CH is just plain scared
If that wasn’t bad enough, I take a walk over to Nappy Afro where there is an ongoing discussions about why no one should eff with iSouja. Huh??? What??? Because he had 300 billion hits on YouTube? Because he ignorantly mocked Ice-T? He’s now worthy of the term “Career Killer”?What the holy hell is going on in the world? Why is everyone shook?
In my esteemed opinion, sales do not – ever – equal respect. Vanilla Ice sold 11 million. MC Hammer sold 10 million. They’re most valuable contribution to hip-hop was retiring. I dig Hammer’s new career as a motivational dude, not as a rapper. So you sell? Who cares?
Secondly, Soulja Boy is like the kid in school that everyone thinks is cool because he respects nothing and no one – and sounds incredibly ignorant doing so. People think its funny that he talks about how old you are, or mocks your personal style. And he has the bullhorn of YouTube to spread the message quickly to other like-minded dolts.
But everyone knows how to deal with someone who knows everything – you call him on his ish. If I was Ice-T, I would have challenged him to a cipher. Let’s go line for line and see who’s real. Get off the webcam, come down and let’s get into some ish. The fastest way to cut this dude down is to ether him quick. Are you telling me no one out there has the stones to do it? People line up to go after Hov and this guy gets a pass?
Personally, I think the ice is already cracking beneath his feet. iSouljaboyTellem is dropping December 16th. Don’t worry – it’ll go platinum. But how much further beyond that? You need another “Crank That” to fuel that monster and “Bird Walk” ain’t it. Its been on the charts 3 weeks and its only at #19 on Billboard. Uh oh.
Its on Soulja Boy to stop himself from being another flash in the pan. I’m all fine with the “don’t hate, appreciate” mess – if you have no problem with him, then peace. But those that do – and they are legion – should stop complaining about him and take it to him or shut the hell up.
Pressure busts pipes. This dude will fold faster than a cheap lawnchair.
