People REALLY Need To Stop Fronting On DJ Premier
Not only is DJ Premier one of the dopest producers of all time, everything I read/watch/listen to about him tells me he is one real dude. The guy is mad grounded and he doesn’t seem to get gassed over his place in history and his legacy in the hip-hop game. Unlike others . SMH.
Primo has had a front row seat for some of the greatest moments in hip-hop and has laced joints on more rap classics (Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Ready To Die) than other suckers will ever see. The part I dig most about Primo (pause, pause, etc) is that he is the furthest thing from a hater: he appreciates dope music and shows respect to those who create it.
You must remember how hyped you were when Jay-Z originally talked about The Black Album and said that he was getting Premier to drop some tracks.
I peeped this great original video over at DJ Premier Blog where Premier broke it down on a subject I had always had questions about, which was why he wasn’t on Nas’ Untitled and Jigga’s American Gangster :
So let me get this right: Jay-Z, Nas and 50 Cent have all refused Premier joints. What the holy hell? I have heard the argument that Premier’s sounds hasn’t really changed since he was Waxmaster C (look it up, dummies). There is some truth to that – he has a signature sound (Ludacris’ “MVP”, as a recent example). But Primo has shown that he can morph his sound (witness “Shake This” from Royce Da 5′9″) and move away from the formula when required.
Regardless, having Premier on a track is never a stupid move. Heads will continue to check for him regardless of whether he is the “hot” producer of the moment or not. Besides, if 50 Cent really wanted to show he was still really serious, he’d jump on a Premier track right quick.
If an artist passed on a Primo joint he gets an L. I don’t care who they care, the loose a little respect. Jay, act right. Nas, stop tripping. 50, he might save your career.
I feel better.
