Four More Hip-Hop Movies That Need To Be Made

Posted on 10 January 2009 by BDouble (0)

As we prepare for the release of the autobiographical Notorious , it got me thinking about other hip-hop luminaries that could use a movie about their life and experiences. Some would be an interesting footnote in the history of rap. Others are just fascinating on their own – and they’re true. YFWB presents four subjects that would make for excellent screen time:

Vanilla Ice
Obviously not for any legacy that Robert Van Winkle left on hip-hop, but Ice Ice Baby’s tale of going from obscurity to the height of fame to relative obscurity (not counting his appearance on “The Surreal Life”) would be an interesting one. Imagine seeing how the labels chose some dude to manufacture their way into the hip-hop world through that dudes eyes would be worth the price of a ticket.

Marion “Suge” Knight

Can you imagine the fu*kery that went down at Death Row Records? Books have been written already, but the story of this infamous west coast label needs to be told. From Eazy-E releasing Dre under the threat of a baseball bat to the trial of Snoop Dogg to the death of Tupac, there are enough story lines to fill a sequel – or two.

Russell Simmons
The life story of the founder of the Def Jam label and the godfather of hip-hop is an interesting one. How he and Rick Rubin started promoting and producing rap acts in college and how they went on to create a label that brough us some of the most legendary rap artists on the planet. The story of their meager, meager beginnings to creating a multimillion dollar company would be interesting. That, plus Russell’s own personal story is interesting as well – the clothing line, Kimora, yoga.

Rick Rubin
While the story of Def Jam would be covered with Russell Simmons, the life of hip-hop hippie and Buddhist Rick Rubin is different and maybe even more interesting. The dude was the original DJ for the Beastie Boys, the producer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ classic album Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik and he was named by MTV as “the most important producer in 20 years.” He’s seen it all and is still aroud to bang out classic joints like Jay-Z’s “99 Problems.” His would be a fascinating insight into the music industry.

Hollywood needs to cut me a check.
