THE CONFESSIONAL: I’m Not Anticipating Most Of The “Most Anticipated” Albums
They say confession is good for the soul. Today we offer another installment of The Confessional, an ongoing feature on Your Favorite White Boy, where your man B-Double will be confessing certain things that he would not dare bring up in the company of his hip-hop brethren.
Bless me Reverend Run for I have sinned.
It’s been 7 days since my last confession.
My man Rizoh over at The Rap Up dug up a list of the top 20 most anticipated hip-hop albums of 2009. After looking over the list, I’m not really that excited about upcoming releases scheduled for the next 365 days. There are many reasons for this, so let me “a break it downnnnn” (word to Yo Gabba Gabba).
Firstly, a number of these joints are just not coming out, so I’ll just take them off right now. These would be:
- Lupe Fiasco – LupEND
- Rakim – The 7th Seal
- Saigon – The Greatest Story Ever Told
- Kanye West – Good Ass Job
- Lil Wayne – Tha Carter IV
So 25% of the list is busted right off the top. Moving on, there are some releases that I just could give a rat’s ass about, so unless Big Baby Jesus himself comes down and co-signs these jams, they won’t make it into the ol’ headphones:
- Chamillionaire – Venom
- Slim Thug – Boss Of All Bosses
The next up on the list are so-called “major” releases that I think will be “major” disappointments. These include:
- 50 Cent – Before I Self Destruct
- Eminem – Relapse (yeah, I said it)
- Lil Wayne – Rebirth and/or I Can’t Feel My Face and/or T-Wayne
- Raekwon – Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2
Finally, we’ll cut out a few releases that I will put on “unicorn status”, which is to say that while I will definitely check for them if they come out, I will only believe them when I see them – on store shelves:
- Dr. Dre – Detox
- Jay-Z – Blueprint 3
- Outkast – TBA
That leaves 6 albums – that’s 1 more than 5 – that I am half excited for:
- Joe Budden – Padded Room
- Jadakiss – The Last Kiss
- Busta Rhymes – Back On my B.S.
- Wale – TBA
- Mos Def – The Ecstatic
- The Clipse – ‘Til The Casket Drops
Out of those, only three of them – Busta, Clipse and Jada – I am confident I will thoroughly enjoy. The other artists have been hit and miss for me, so I’m not hopeful. Maybe I’m just a cynic.
Now, if all 6 of the remaining albums are bangers and Blueprint 3, and Detox both drop while Em’s joint is better than anticipated, it could be a great year for hip-hop. But I’m not holding my breath. Neither should you.
