Biting Bloggers Is Weak Sauce
UPDATE: Now, via TSS, I find out Skillz has video episodes on this same concept too.
I’ve been away. Sorry. Moving on, I hesitated saying anything, but I’m starting to see a pattern. I was on my regular tour of the raposphere a while back when I came across daily read The Smoking Section, specifically The Smoke Break area. It was right there where I saw a post from Elliott “YN” Wilson’s Rap Radar: “Hip Hop Confessions”. Peep the description:
“Sundays are slow on the ‘net. So the marketing genius YN and I thought the Sabbath would be a great day to come clean with the Hip-Hop gods. After the jump, check out the first installment of Hip-Hop Confessions. Com’on [sic], we all have one.”
Ah, hell no. Where have I heard THAT before? Maybe here. Or here. Or here. Even my man Chuck over at Sportaphile put me up on this swagger jacking. Yep, these “marketing geniuses” took my concept. Just for entertainment, let’s check out my description:
“They say confession is good for the soul. Today we offer another installment of The Confessional, an ongoing feature on Your Favorite White Boy, where your man B-Double will be confessing certain things that he would not dare bring up in the company of his hip-hop brethren.”
Now, you can’t tell me that you haven’t seen my Confessional series. Its been on TSS and a bunch of other websites that are on the RR blogroll. I’m major like that.
Look here – I’m not hating. In fact, I think this kind of copying is actually flattering. And if people want to take my concepts and run with them, that’s fine. But what I DO have a problem with are established industry folks like these Rap Radar dudes or rappers with a record deal biting on bloggers who are just trying to create fresh content.
Use those interns to come up with some new ideas. Originality. Its what’s for dinner.

“But I done did it/And y’all want to take my flow, and run with it/That’s cool, I was the first one with it” – Jay-Z on “Imaginary Players”.
Seems fitting
Word, B. I respect Rap Radar, but they need a new concept.
That’s messed up. The least they could do is give you some credit. Not to mention that Dilla post is horrible… Mannie Fresh > Dilla? Are you mad?!
Yeah, Mookie – they got hammered for that post. Well deserved, too.
That’s wack. RR owes ya a link and an apology, no doubt.
Who are you from someone to “bite” you?
You originated the term “Confession”?
“Now, you can’t tell me that you haven’t seen my Confessional series.”
Why not? You’re not that major.
Settle down, b.
Like I said over at TSS, I didn’t coin the term “confessional” and if people want to run with it, fine. But let’s run the tape. RR’s version:
1) Happens on a Sunday;
2) Features “confessions” about people talking about things that they are embarrassed to admit to their friends.
I’m not the one who claimed to be a “marketing genius” coming up with this idea. And major or not, those very posts have been featured on major sites like TSS and others. So, the idea that they had seen it before is pretty damn likely. The online hip-hop community is a small world.
Either way, I have no problem with RR, but this is hip-hop. You call folks on biting around here.
If you bothered to watch the video on the post at the Smoking Section you would noticed that the video was filmed in late 2008 and you didn’t even do your confessional stuff until recently. get off your high horse before you fall off.
Actually, Davis, I did watch the video. Too bad you didn’t do your research. I started that series in December 2008 (Dec 9th, actually). As long-time readers know, YFWB got deleted in February and I had to rebuild it. Even still, I put that into my archives, so you should still know – with a few clicks – that I’ve been doing this for a minute now.
Again: I have no problem with people adopting the concept. I have a problem with people patting themselves on the back for “coming up” with a concept they clearly didn’t think of themselves.
Damn. Has it really gone this far?
Nah, but someone had to call them on it. Happy to do it.
