Peep This: Q-Tip On Busta Almost Joining ATCQ
Admittedly, I love this “behind the scenes” type stuff. Its always interesting to see rap cats talk about seminal moments in their careers and what was happening away from the sight of fans. As seen on Miss Info’s site, Peter Rosenberg sat down with Kamal to chop it up about just that.
In the above clip, Tip talks about how for a brief moment early in Busta Rhymes’ career, Bus-a-Bus pondered leaving his group Leaders Of The New School and joining A Tribe Called Quest.
This is a serious “what if” moment: can you imagine what Tribe would have been like if Busta joined them? Q-Tip and Busta in one group would have been incredible. The two have always enjoyed great chemistry and their appearances together have aways been dope. I’m not sure if Phife wouldn’t have been crowded out in such a scenario, but I can’t front – I would be OK with that.
Although I think its pretty obvious that Busta was born to be a solo artist. His dynamic personality sucks all the oxygen out of a record and makes any other MC appearing on the track seem doomed to second banana status. I may be even willing to say that also applies to Q-Tip himself. Its hard to get any shine on a Busta cut. Its pretty much a given that he would have eventually left Tribe at some point. But it would have been a great ride until then.
Now, what I really find interesting is one line drops on us: that groups in hip-hop have basically become non-existent these says. The Clipse, Kidz In The Hall, The Lox, Slaughterhouse, UGK (RIP Pimp C), The Cool Kids The Knux and G-Unit notwithstanding, he may have a point. There were a lot of groups in hip-hop back in the day. But Tip goes on to state that it really illustrates the “dismal” state of hip-hop.
He ‘s probably right – its more about ego and getting your own shine that working to create something better than the individual parts. But I’m curious what you all think.
